A Guide to Choosing and Using a Whetstone or Sharpening Stone

Description

There are three steps to sharpening: grinding, polishing, and finishing.

  • 240-400 grit removes nicks and other imperfections from the blade.
  • 400-2000 grit smooths out the imperfections of grinding and returns the blade to a fine edge.
  • 1000-3000 grit is for fine honing.
  • 2000-8000 grit is for polishing.
