As always Leatherman attended the 2019 shot show in Las Vegas to showcase some of their new products coming in 2019. Leatherman are one of those companies that produce a very specific product in the Leatherman Multitool and have pretty much perfected its design so when you hear of new product releases in the multitool market your mind automatically starts to think how could you possibly change something that has already been pretty much perfected and still keep customers interested. But guess what Leatherman do this every year and I still wait eagerly each year to see what they have been working on. This year is definitely a different line up from what we have seen in the past with the release of their P2 and P4 multitools and also their T2 and T4 pocket tools.
What can I say I am a Leatherman nut and always a happy Leatherman nut after seeing the new products showcased each year. This years line up of Leatherman multitools is a little different as they have just release a range of tools using magnets to hold the blades and tools in place. From my first observations of this it appears the release of the blades is going to be a lot quicker and easier which I am excited about to test. The new Leatherman P2 is the first generation of Leatherman tools using magnetic tecnology. Thats right they are now using magnets to hold the blades and accessories in place when closed and also the pliers will keep closed by use of magnets. This allows for the blades, screwdrivers and scissors all to be opened a lot more easily and without having to use finger nails or the ends of your fingers. It also allows the opening of the pliers when needed to be a lot quicker and the pliers can be flicked open with 1 hand so great for tradies or anybody doing work that needs a free hand. The blades will still lock in place when opened so no problems with accidentally closing on your fingers. The P2 come with a robust sheath for carrying extra little accessories.
The Leatherman P4 is the same operationally as the P2 and also the same size but with the addition of a few extra features. With the P4 you get a few more blades and also a heavy duty saw. The P4 comes supplied with a sheath so great to store extra littles bits and pieces when hiking or camping. I will definitely be adding one of these to my collection when available middle of this year.
The Leatherman T2 is quite an interesting new addition to the Leatherman range. To all intensive purposes this is a swiss army knife on steriods. Its robust built makes it great for heavy use and its design makes it easy to carry deep in your pocket without the need to have a belt pouch on your belt. The T2 also adopts the new Leatherman magnetic technology so the blades and screwdrivers will be a lot easier to deploy that those blades on a swiss army knife or similar tools.
Again the T4 is pretty much the same as the T2 but with the addition of a file and a few other accessories and also a pocket clip on the side so it can be carried high in your pocked by clipping to the inside of your pocket. Great for regular use.
